UCLan vice-chancellor pledges support

UCLan vice-chancellor Malcolm McVicar has signed a letter to Preston's MP urging him not to support higher tuition fees.

The giant letter was presented to McVicar in his office and he placed his signature alongside hundreds of students calling for a review of the government's tuition fee policy.

Beth Woodthorpe-Evans, Union President, presented the letter to McVicar and called on students to support the campaign.

She said: "The Students’ Union is delighted that Vice Chancellor, Malcolm McVicar is supporting our campaign by pledging his continuing support to help fight the higher education funding debate, which will make sure students aren’t priced out of university.

"The letter speaks out to Mark Hendrick and calls for him, like every other MP, to come clean on fees before the review and general election; to ensure everyone voting has an informed decision on their stance on higher education.

"Not only is Dr. McVicar publicly supporting our own Union campaign, he has invited me to sit on the Academic Board subcommittee that will give an official UCLan response to the fee review, a crucial way to ensure that UCLan students, both present and potential, are heard and represented.

"The letter has been sent to numerous MP’s across the country from other students’ unions who refuse to allow MP’s to hide behind the report of the review."
