Student Group Fundraising: What You Need to Know

Why Fundraising Matters

Fundraising is a great way for student groups to support their activities, develop skills, and contribute to causes they care about. Since UCLan Students’ Union (SU) is a registered charity, all fundraising must follow charity laws and SU rules as our affiliated groups.

You can raise money for your student group, but it must go through UCLan SU’s official processes. Here’s how:

  • Online Fundraising (Recommended): Sell tickets or accept donations through your student group page on the SU website.
  • Card Payments: Use SU-approved card machines (available for booking).
  • Cash Collections (Last Resort): Any cash collected must be deposited with the SU as soon as possible.

Want to support an external charity? That’s great! Just follow these rules:

  1. Choose a Registered Charity – Check the UK Charity Register.
  2. Get Charity Approval – Obtain written permission from the charity (email or letter).
  3. Be Transparent – Clearly state where the money is going in all fundraising promotions.
  4. Follow SU Finance Rules – Cash should be deposited with SU and then transferred to the charity.

Your student group can also seek sponsorship from businesses, your UCLan school/faculty, or external funding bodies. Check the sponsorship page for more details.
