We have some exciting new voluntary opportunities!

Some places on our Trustee Board specifically for current students are now open. We are looking to appoint new Student Trustees to join the Trustee Board to help to ensure that we understand relevant issues from the perspective of current students. Student Trustees will help us ensure that all the Board’s decisions are made in the best interests of students.

This is a unique position of significant responsibility which will look fantastic on your CV. You'll gain excellent experience and develop skills that translate directly to professional life.

Time Commitments:

  • Approximately 5-7 hours per month as a Student Trustee, which includes a monthly 3-hour long Board meeting, usually held 4pm-7pm. These will typically be held in person in the Students’ Union building.
  • Reading materials before each meeting.
  • Attend two development days per year with the other Trustees.
  • Have the opportunity to attend training and networking events, build relationships with other Trustees and take an interest in the Union’s activities.

Term in Role: Up to 3 years (or until you cease to be enrolled as a student at UCLan whichever is sooner)

Salary: Voluntary Position (unpaid)

Location: Preston Campus/Online

Interview Process: The online interview will take around 30 minutes.

The interview panel will consist of the Chair of Students’ Council (or their nominee) and 2 Elected Officers. We will share the themes of the interview questions with you in advance of this to ensure you can prepare.

About UCLan SU

UCLAN SU is an independent charity which exists to represent over 28,000 students at the University of Central Lancashire. Our organisation is run by students, for students and provides support, representation, advice, student groups and networks, and commercial activity through our events, bar and retail.

You will be joining us at a particularly exciting time as we have just launched our new 4 year strategy which is focused on tackling the cost of studying, boosting student wellbeing and increasing student attainment. We are here to support students to learn well and live more at University and our vision is that students are thriving because we’re thriving too!

Our new trustees will be at the forefront of supporting the successful delivery of our new strategy through sharing their professional expertise and strategic mindset whilst providing constructive challenges to enable us to be the best we can be for our students.

We are delighted to be inviting applications for candidates to fill 2 Trustee positions with expertise in Finance or HR.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic oversight in finance or HR.
  • Challenge and guide our elected officers and CEO.
  • Build strong relationships within the board and the wider UCLan SU community.
  • Ensure the Board works together with officers and staff to prioritise students' belonging, wellbeing, and success in everything we do.

Who are we looking for?

  • People with the skills, experience and capability to oversee finance or HR at a strategic level.
  • People who resonate with our values and are eager to make a tangible difference.
  • Collaborative team players who can commit to collective leadership and can build and nurture strong relationships.

What’s the commitment?

There are 10 meetings per year which we are happy to offer a blend of remote and in person access for, with two away days in January and June which we would like you to attend in person. We expect the commitment to be around one day per month.

In order for us to be able to make sure every student is able to celebrate who they are, shape their university experience and feel connected to a community, we need to continue to innovate and make sure we champion diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in everything that we do. This means having a commitment to supporting a diverse and inclusive Trustee Board.

We would particularly welcome applications from Black and Asian candidates, those who identify as women or non-binary, and disabled candidates, in order to improve representation of these groups on our Board.

We are committed to ensuring that people with a diverse range of skills and experience are encouraged to apply and contribute fully as Trustees. We will strive to remove the barriers that prevent people from applying to become Trustees and ensure that our application and selection processes are inclusive of and accessible to people with a wide range of skills and lived experience.

We welcome candidates from across the UK with the ability to claim reasonable travel expenses to attend in person board meetings.
