Union Hustings Recap: General Election 2024

On June 17th 2024, UCLan Students’ Union attended a pivotal hustings event, gathering parliamentary candidates from diverse political backgrounds to engage directly with students on pressing local and national issues. The event was attended by UCLan Students’ Union’s VP Education Charlotte, VP Activities Sophie, VP Welfare Joe, and President Luke, alongside a vibrant audience eager to scrutinise the candidates' platforms.

Union Hustings Recap: General Election 2024

 

- Alliance for Democracy and Freedom (David Brooks): Criticised government spending on environmental policies and emphasised practical solutions for economic growth. Highlighted issues with public transport and parking in Preston.

- Conservatives (Trevor Hart): Focused on revitalising Preston's city centre by addressing vacant retail units, improving accessibility, and reducing congestion. Advocated for better healthcare access and parking facilities.

- Green Party (Isabella Metcalf-Riener): Through a premade video promoting climate action plans, including workers' rights and renewable energy projects. Criticised mainstream party policies on environmental issues and called for bolder actions.

- Independent (Michael Lavalette): Called for equitable funding across educational sectors and investment in local infrastructure to improve living standards. Advocated for a more integrated NHS and criticised austerity measures. He also spoke out about the ongoing international crisis in Palestine and Israel.

- Labour (Sir Mark Hendrick): Advocated for continued investment in local services and healthcare, highlighting the new hospital in South Ribble as an addition to the existing Royal Preston Hospital. Emphasised economic stability and support for community-based services.

-Liberal Democrats (Neil Darby): Advocated for a green revolution to combat the cost of living, focusing on renewable energy and insulation projects. Promised increased funding for local governments and emphasised the need for modernised healthcare facilities.

- Reform UK (James Elliot): Although not in attendance, Reform UK have been focusing on personal freedom and economic liberty, advocating for reduced government intervention and taxation.

- Rejoin EU (Joseph O’Meachair): Criticised Brexit's impact on Preston and the wider economy, advocating for closer integration with the EU. Emphasised the need for economic recovery and international cooperation.

- UKIP (Derek Killeen): Although not in attendance, UKIP traditionally focuses on issues such as Brexit, immigration, and sovereignty.

- Independent (Yousuf Bhailok): Through a pre-made video he advocated for representing the community's voices and addressing local issues such as education, healthcare, and economic development.

The hustings sparked lively debates on a range of topics including healthcare provision, educational funding, housing affordability, and environmental sustainability. Candidates fielded questions directly from the community and students, addressing concerns about job prospects, mental health support, and the future of higher education.

Recent research from the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) and the National Union of Students (NUS) highlighted the pivotal role of student voters in the upcoming 2024 General Election. With student voters projected to hold the balance of power in 50 marginal constituencies, their influence cannot be overstated.

In collaboration with other Students' Unions representing half a million voters nationwide, UCLan Students’ Union stands as a bold collective voice for students, advocating for their rights and well-being. Our members face significant challenges, including hardship, poverty, and hunger, exacerbated by current funding and organisational structures within Higher Education.

 

Our manifesto outlines key demands for the upcoming election:

1. Student Accommodation Reform & Fair Rent Controls:

   - Implement policies to provide students with more tenancy rights and ensure higher standards for accommodation.

 

2. Reformed Higher Education and Student Funding Models:

   - Increase maintenance loans in line with real living standards.

   - Advocate for transition towards maintenance grants to alleviate student financial burdens.

 

3. Uplifted Funding for a Public-Owned NHS and University Support:*

   - Ensure adequate funding and support for universities to bridge gaps in NHS provisions.

   - Provide free legal aid, subsidised on-campus food, and comprehensive mental health support.

 

4. National Transport Card for All Students:

   - Introduce a national transport card to remove transportation barriers for students across the country.
