Chess Club

About us

WELCOME TO UCLAN CHESS!!

Chess is back at UCLAN and better than ever! The club aims to create a fun and friendly environment where players of all ability can chill out, socialise and learn the beautiful game of chess as a collective.

There is something for everyone!

  • Beginners: If you have always had an interest in learning how to play chess, now is your chance! Now has never been better to get into chess, as it’s a fun way to keep your brain active and develop problem solving skills. We will teach you how to play while having some fun along the way. We look forward to teaching you the exciting side of chess with our shorter time controls.
  • Intermediate/Advanced: For those that have been playing for a while and are wanting to improve, we aim to go through opening and tactics together alongside playing games. In our session we will mainly be playing 10 l 0 rapid, so get ready for exciting time scrambles. We will be looking to host tournaments online and over the board internally, with scope for external competitions.
  • Our long-term goal:  We aim to introduce competitive play into the society and eventually, enter a local league! To do this, we will be working hard to encourage an increase in frequent players

WEEKLY SESSIONS: Every Wednesday 17:00-20:00

Harrington 337

Putting the ‘S’ in chess! Socials:

We will be putting on a variety of socials throughout the year such as bowling, laser tag, minigolf, and group meals plus anything else that we can come up with!

Memberships for all this are only £5, so come be a part of UCLAN’s revitalised chess club

Being on a committee is a great way to become more involved with the community at UCLan, meet new friends and develop new and existing skills for your CV. Anyone can be on a committee, as long as you are a member of your club or society. Students that are elected onto a committee through this election will start their role on 1st August 2025 until 31st July 2026. Could you be the next leader of your club or society?
